The Pipeline Industries Guild

The Pipeline Industries Guild was formed in 1957. Since then, it has evolved to be the only association world-wide to cater directly for the needs of the pipeline industry, regardless of engineering discipline, application, or qualification. The Guild’s membership comprises those with interests in pipelines world-wide, transporting hydrocarbon products, chemicals, water, wastewater, and many other substances, both on and offshore. All are governed by the industry’s twin need to combine quality with safety, while at the same time meeting all the latest environmental and legislative requirements. The Guild is the respected authority within all branches of the pipeline industry, and there are few pipeline engineering problems its members cannot solve. Part of its increasing and unique strength is the Guild’s ability to attract members from all sides of the pipeline industry, whether they be concerned with deep-sea pipelines or with the latest developments on land in no-dig and minimal-disturbance pipe and duct-laying technology.

ISO 9001

The most widely recognised standard is ISO 9001, a basic quality management system that can be used in industries of any size, anywhere in the world. Registration to ISO 9001 (or other quality/management standards) provides objective proof that a business has implemented an effective quality management system, and that it satisfies all of the requirements of the applicable standard. An external, impartial expert called a registrar or CB (Certification Body) conducts an on-site audit to determine whether or not a company is in conformance to the standard. If they are found to be in conformance, they will be issued a certificate showing their address, scope of operations and the seals of the accreditation bodies that give the registrar its legitimacy.

OHSAS 18001

The OHSAS 18001 standard (may also be mistakenly referred to as ISO 18001) is internationally accepted as a method of assessing and auditing occupational health and safety management systems. Developed by leading trade and international standards bodies, it provides a framework for organisations to instigate proper and effective management of health & safety in the workplace. By having a clearly defined management system in place to identify and control health and safety risks, organisations are able to minimise risks to their workforce and visitors or external contractors on their premises. The standard will enable organisations to put in place processes for continually reviewing and improving occupational health and safety.

ISO 14001

ISO 14001 was developed to provide a management system to help organisations reduce their environmental impact. The standard provides the framework for organisations to demonstrate their commitment to the environmental by: Reducing harmful effects on the environment Providing evidence of continual improvement of Environmental Management The standard is generic and does not apply to any particular industry or business sector. It provides a strategic framework that can be used to meet internal and external objectives for Environmental Management.

PICS

PICS makes it easy for companies to develop and maintain a world-class pre-qualification system for managing contractors and vendors and was created nearly a decade ago. As a renowned contractor pre-qualification company, PICS offers world-class supplier pre-qualification, with an exceptional focus on safety. PICS is the global standard in the Chemical, Oil & Gas, Power, Construction, Mining and Manufacturing industries, and is the fastest-growing company in the world in supplier and contractor management. By having a clearly defined management system in place to identify and control health and safety risks, organisations are able to minimise risks to their workforce and visitors or external contractors on their premises. The standard will enable organisations to put in place processes for continually reviewing and improving occupational health and safety.

EUSR

EUSR is designed to support industry employers and add value to the sector. As the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the gas, power, waste management and water industries, Energy & Utility Skills (EU Skills) operates an independent skills platform, referred to as EUSR, which provides recognised standards for the utility sector. Individuals who qualify for registration with EUSR are issued with a card and appear on the EUSR website. EUSR is beneficial to both employers and individuals as they move between companies or between industries. Employers have a robust way of verifying the abilities of their workers while individuals have a recognised method of demonstrating their abilities to employers.
